History
The Border Collie has its origins in the grazing border country between England and Scotland. It has been adopted as an Australian working dog because of its outstanding qualities as a sheepdog. All of today’s registered Border Collies have been bred from the original working dogs. The first recorded import of a Border Collie was in 1901.

Grooming and Physical Needs
- Grooming Needs: Thorough combing and brushing weekly is needed to remove dead coat and ensure no matting is occurring, especially after water exercise.
- Coat Type: Border Collies are double coated dogs with a short thick undercoat and a moderately long medium textured top coat.
- Moulting: Moderate.
- Exercise Needs: A 30 minute walk each morning and evening to keep your Border fit, alert and happy. Along with training to keep them mentally stimulated and alert.
- Average Life Span: 12 to 14 years old although some have lived until they were 18.
Behaviour
- Family: They are very family orientated and MUST be part of it in every sense of the word, they are not a dog to be left in the backyard.
- Temperament: Keen, alert, active, inquisitive, intelligent, loyal and faithful companion.
- Trainability: Intelligent and minds are like sponges, absorbing all new tasks with an eagerness and willingness to please. Love to learn new tasks and tricks all their life.
- Sociability (Other Pets): Prefers to socialise with their breed but is quite able to be sociable with any pet.
- Barking: Low tendency – but if an issue training can control this & turn it into a controlled ‘trick’.
Talents
Excel in obedience, agility, herding or rally-o trials, fly ball, dancing with dogs, heelwork to music.
Notes
An ethical breeder will have tested both parents for TNS, CL and CEA and have had their hips and elbows scored.
