7 Facts You Never Knew About Dogs

Here’s a few facts that you probably don’t know or things that you might not understand about our beloved Dogs.

  1. Dogs can detect diseases
Dogs are known for their extraordinary sense of smell. That’s why it’s no surprise that studies have found that Dogs can smell and be trained to sniff out the scent of diseases such as cancer and diabetes. This has allowed for Dogs to be used as service animals, as they are able to detect early signs of seizures before they happen.
  2. Dogs don’t feel guilt
Despite the famous ‘puppy dog eyes’ stare, your cheeky canine doesn’t actually feel guilty for doing something they shouldn’t have. A study has found that there were no differences in behaviour associated with the guilty look, it’s just the way human interpret the Dog’s body language to getting in trouble.
  3. Dogs are left-handed or right-handed
Studies have found that Dogs can be left-handed, right-handed or ambidextrous – just like humans! You can determine your Dog’s paw preference by studying the paw they use when holding a bone while chewing on it.
  4. Dogs have their own fingerprints
Just like humans, the combination of ridges and crease on a Dog’s paw form a unique patterned print. However, the best way to identify a Dog is actually through their nose – no two Dogs have the same nose print!
  5. Dogs wag their tails for a reason
Tail wagging can be attributed to many different things and not all of them mean that the dog is happy, as you may have thought. Tail wagging can be associated with happiness, fear, insecurity or a warning.
  6. Dogs have the intelligence of a two-year-old
Research suggests that a Dog has the mental abilities of a 2-2.5-year-old human and can understand more than 150 words. The intelligence of Dogs varies and is determined by the breed.
  7. Dogs can see colour:
It’s a common myth that Dogs can only see in black and white but they can actually see in colour. Dogs can distinguish colours on a blue and yellow scale, but not red and green.
