Quick Tips for Taking Instagram Pics of Your Dog!

Getting that perfect pooch pic for Instagram can be challenging at the best of times. Your Dog moves and the photo can be blurry, the lighting isn’t right or you set up a perfect shot and then they look away just as you take the pic!

So we have put together a few tips to help you take the perfect snap that shows off your Dogs good side.

Get your Dog’s attention

Sometimes, simply calling your Dog’s name isn’t enough. In that case try using Dog treats. Sweeten them up a bit by giving them a few treats to nibble then hold onto a few. Often they will stare directly at you and be on their best behaviour because they know you’ve got the goods – who said bribery doesn’t work?!

Bonus tip: try tapping your treat above or next to the camera. Their hungry little eyes will be locked to the camera just make sure they don’t lunge for it!

Change your perspective

Get on your Dog’s level to get an extra interesting snap. Getting down to their level can often be less distracting than you hovering over them meaning that they may be more relaxed and playful for the camera.

Bonus tip: Take photos from above & below as well and mix them up for unique photos of all angles.

Colourful backgrounds and props

Dogs have a tendency to blend into photographs particularly if they are a darker colour. Make them pop by using brightly coloured beds, blankets and toys in the background.

Timing is everything!

If you want to catch your pooch smiling take them for a quick run or play a quick game. They’ll be more relaxed and comfortable and will still be experiencing the adrenaline rush from all the fun they just had meaning you will have more of a chance to catch them happy and relaxed.

Edit, edit, edit!

There are countless free smartphone apps that enable you to sharpen, brighten, crop, ad highlights and filter your images, notwithstanding what you can do in Instagram.

Our favourites are:

  • VSCO
  • Aviary
  • Snapseed

You can even mix it up with a little video, or get creative with an Instagram Boomerang, a separate app that creates captivating mini videos that loop back and forth.
