Azawakh

History

Hailing from the Sahel region of the Sahara Desert, the proud and elegant Azawakh has long been a guardian, hunter, and companion to tribes in that region. He’s named for the Azawakh valley in the Sahara.

Description

a lean and swift hunter with a regal presence. Particularly long longs and elegant frame, the Azawakh sighthound gives a general impression of great fineness.

Grooming and Physical Needs

  • Grooming Needs: A semi-regular once-over with a hound glove should keep your Azawakh's coat looking good.
  • Coat Type: The short, smooth Azawakh coat comes in a variety of colors, including clear sand to dark red.
  • Moulting: This breed is an average shedder, not known for heavy moulting but still needing attention every once in a while.
  • Exercise Needs: Azawakhs that are kept as pets should have regular opportunities to run free on open ground as well as have long, brisk walks daily, preferably at the same time every day.
  • Average Life Span: 12 to 15 years

Behaviour

  • Family: Known to be loyal, affectionate and gentle with family members (adults and children alike).
  • Temperament: Quick, attentive, distant, proud and alert, Azawakhs remain instinctively reserved with strangers and gentle with those they love.
  • Trainability: The Azawakh is relatively easy to train due to its loyal nature.
  • Sociability (Other Pets): Because they are quite timid in general it can be hard to calm them around other pets at a later age. Socialise regularly as a puppy and their gentle nature will do the rest.
  • Barking: Azawakhs are well loved for their lack of barking and howling. They are a quiet and reserved breed.

Talents

As sighthounds they’re attracted by motion making them suitable for joggers and various other fans of movement activities.

Notes

Azawakhs are gentle and affectionate with their families, but they can be standoffish toward strangers and dislike being touched by people they don’t know. They’re also protective of their people and property. Fans describe them as a wonderful combination of loyal and independent.
