History
Border Terriers have changed very little over the years and are essentially a working terrier from the borders of England and Scotland. Originally bred to run and work with foxhounds, they helped to contain the local fox population. The Border Terrier would go underground and either ‘bolt’ (chase out) the fox or stay with it and bark to indicate to those above ground where the fox was located.
Description
The Border Terrier is a small, rough-coated breed of Dog, with coat colours in red, blue and tan, grizzle and tan or wheaten. They have distinctive otter-like heads, a short strong muzzle and whiskery features. They are small, hardy and adaptable.
Grooming and Physical Needs
- Grooming Needs: Border Terriers are a breed that is hand stripped. This means that the dead hair is stripped out by hand or with special tools that remove the hair without cutting it.
- Coat Type: A short, dense undercoat covered with a wiry topcoat.
- Moulting: The coat can be managed by doing a full strip a couple of times a year as well as combing and tidying on a weekly basis.
- Exercise Needs: A daily walk and opportunity to play in the park is ideal. Many Border Terriers also love chasing a ball.
- Average Life Span: 14 – 16 years
Behaviour
- Family: Spirited in nature, they are good family Dogs and will quickly become part of the family. They are bright, tenacious and lovable dogs and they get on better with other Dogs than many terriers, and most of all, they are an amazingly versatile breed.
- Temperament: They are game and active and pretty well tireless but they are not hyperactive or bothersome to live with.
- Trainability: They are intelligent and very trainable. They excel in many Dog sports including agility, earthdog, lure coursing and tracking.
- Sociability (Other Pets): They are usually good with other Dogs and cats (if raised in the family).
- Barking: Borders are not big barkers, but will let you know when someone is at the door.
Talents
Equally love romping in outdoors and being curled up on the lounge.
