History
The Dobermann originated in Germany. In the 19th Century a man named Herr Louis Dobermann lived in the city of Apoldo (East Germany) in the principality of Thueringen. He served as the town dog catcher, night patrolman and the rates collector among other duties. There was a demand for fearless watchdogs and Herr Dobermann started selectively breeding the best of the locally available dogs for this purpose.
Description
The Dobermann is medium in size, with a body that is square. Compactly built, muscular and powerful, for great endurance and speed. Elegant in appearance, of proud carriage, reflecting great nobility and temperament.
Grooming and Physical Needs
- Grooming Needs: Low maintenance however weekly grooming will keep their coat healthy and shining.
- Coat Type: Short smooth.
- Moulting: Moderate.
- Exercise Needs: At least 1 hour of exercise each day, such as walking.
- Average Life Span: 10 - 12 years.
Behaviour
- Family: They do tend to be one man dogs though and will not tolerate teasing, so children must be taught how to behave around the dog.
- Temperament: Energetic, watchful, determined, alert, fearless, loyal and obedient.
- Trainability: They are extremely intelligent, with active minds and bodies. They must be properly trained as a bored dog will develop behaviour problems.
- Sociability (Other Pets): They are friendly with other dogs and animals in their home, especially if they has been raised with them. They can be aggressive toward dogs outside their family if they consider them a threat to their loved ones.
- Barking: High tendency.
Talents
The Dobermann is a member of the working group. They were originally bred as a tracking/police dog and today they excel as family and guard dogs.
Notes
The Dobermann needs an owner who is willing and able to display a natural authority over them.
