French Bulldog

History

Around 1850-1860, English Lacemakers of Nottingham left for France to continue their trade. They took with them their β€œtoy” or minature British Bulldogs because of the dogs compact size and companionship & ratting abilities. These miniature bulldogs are thought to have been crossed with Terriers and Pugs, and the French Bulldog evolved.

Description

Sturdy, compact, solid, small dog with good bone, short, smooth coat.

Grooming and Physical Needs

  • Grooming Needs: Brush on a regular basis with a firm bristle brush, and bathe once every two weeks in the warmer months and bathe once a month in the colder months.
  • Coat Type: Texture fine, smooth, lustrous, short and close.
  • Moulting: Minimal shedding.
  • Exercise Needs: Minimal exercise required.
  • Average Life Span: 10 – 12 years.

Behaviour

  • Family: Suitable for all age types, providing the owners can spend time with them.
  • Temperament: Vivacious, deeply affectionate, intelligent.
  • Trainability: Train with consistency and firmness but beware that this dog is very sensitive to the voice, will not take kindly to being screamed at.
  • Sociability (Other Pets): Excellent with other dogs and pets.
  • Barking: Low tendency.

Notes

Potential health problems to watch is a weakness in the back which can be aggravated by the dog jumping down from furniture, particularly when young. French Bulldogs are very susceptible to overheating and must have shelter and fresh water available at all times. They can experience breathing difficulties in hot weather. Most cannot swim so take caution around water.
