The club was founded in 1952 and incorporated in 1991. It aims to maintain a standard that will preserve the character and breed type of the Labrador Retriever. The club promotes ethical breeding, exhibiting, and preserving the working ability of this multipurpose breed.

Labrador Retrievers (commonly known as Labs or Labradors) come in three recognised colours: yellow, black and chocolate. Labradors are classified as a medium-sized dog, strongly built and athletic. They are kindly, outgoing, eager to please and friendly towards humans and other animals. Labradors are smart and even tempered and are usually seen working as guide dogs, assistance dogs, detection and therapy.
