History
The English Toy Terrier developed from the Old English Black and Tan Terrier. They are closely related to the larger Manchester Terrier so they are extremely fast and agile.
The origins of this Dog are in the world of the rat pit, a sport popular in the cities of Victorian England. Terriers were placed in a circle with a number of rats. Bets were then taken as to which Dog would kill its quota of rats in the fastest time. In 1848 a terrier named ‘Tiny’ is recorded killing 300 rats in less than an hour.
Description
Good things come in small packages and that pretty much sums up the English Toy Terrier. A rare breed, they are easy to maintain, full of personality, alert, lovable. A loyal little bundle that will quickly become a cherished member of any family.
Grooming and Physical Needs
- Grooming Needs: Minimal as its short and shiny coat is easy to maintain with a wash and brush.
- Coat Type: Short and shiny, this breed only comes in Black and Tan.
- Moulting: Minimal.
- Exercise Needs: While this is a small Dog, it is still a Terrier and the exercise they need compares mainly to food intake and to keep the active mind occupied.
- Average Life Span: 10 – 13 years
Behaviour
- Family: Perfect for singles or couples and in family situations it is important that children are involved in the Dog’s upbringing and training.
- Temperament: Alert, loyal, intelligent, affectionate and friendly. English toy terriers are lovable, and can be very loud as they love to bark. They enjoy exercise, but also like plenty of cuddles.
- Trainability: Easy to train and known to compete in sports such as obedience and agility.
- Sociability (Other Pets): Gets on well with other pets however it should be noted that the English Toy Terrier is by nature a rat hunter, therefore small animals such as mice, rats, rabbits, guinea pigs, and possibly young kittens, should be kept away from this breed.
- Barking: Love to bark but will only do so when there is a reason.
