History
Pyrenean Mountain Dogs were first brought to Australia from France, their country of origin, in 1843 to be used in the Western District of Victoria for their traditional role of livestock guardians. Today, most Pyreneans are companion animals and look after their families, however their popularity as flock guardians is attracting increasing interest.
Description
The Pyrenean is a dog of great size, imposing and strongly built, yet elegant and without any suggestion of heaviness. NB well made double double dewclaws on the hind legs.
Grooming and Physical Needs
- Grooming Needs: Brush and comb weekly, bath when needed; clip toenails paying particular attention to the double dewclaws.
- Coat Type: Medium Long.
- Moulting: Moults heavily at certain times of the tear and usually a little undercoat any time.
- Exercise Needs: When grown, the Pyrenean Mountain Dog need as little or as much as his owner desires.
- Average Life Span: Normally 11 - 12 years but it is not unheard of for them to live to 15 years and upwards.
Behaviour
- Family: No particular specifications, but likes company i.e. flock or family.
- Temperament: Kindly, tolerant, good with children, protective when necessary.
- Trainability: A independent thinker, the Pyrenean is not easily trained but persistence is the key.
- Sociability (Other Pets): Tolerant of others animals in the family pack.
- Barking: Will bark to sound an alarm and protect their territory.

A good assistance dog for the disabled.
